Ukrainian Roots Community Development Initiative
The Ukrainian Roots Community (URC) is seeking state support and collaboration to establish an Innovative Ukrainian Community Center in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, URC Corp, NFP is dedicated to uniting, modernizing, and strengthening Ukrainian communities across the United States.
This presentation outlines our vision, the demographic and economic impact of the Ukrainian community in Illinois, the challenges we face, and our proposed solutions for creating a vibrant cultural, business, and social hub for Ukrainian residents.
About Ukrainian Roots Community
1
Our Mission
URC is a national initiative dedicated to uniting, modernizing, and strengthening Ukrainian communities across the United States. We build bridges between generations of Ukrainian immigrants and integrate innovative approaches into community development.
2
Key Challenge
We've identified a major issue within Ukrainian communities—the lack of effective communication, collaboration, and integration between established Ukrainian legacy organizations and the new wave of highly skilled Ukrainian professionals.
3
Our Approach
Many existing Ukrainian institutions lack modernization and adaptation to contemporary needs. The new wave of Ukrainian immigrants brings fresh skills and expertise but has limited access to community-driven resources.
Our Innovative Ecosystem
1
Centralized Platform
We've developed a unified digital community platform and mobile application to connect Ukrainians across different sectors, addressing critical gaps in communication and organization.
2
Unified Directory
Our system includes a comprehensive directory of organizations, businesses, and individuals for economic and professional collaboration, fostering community integration.
3
Employment & Services
We offer an employment portal, AI-driven e-services, a community bulletin board, and an event hub to support Ukrainian Americans in their professional and personal lives.
4
Media & Engagement
Our ecosystem includes a media and cultural center with a dedicated Ukrainian radio station, plus an operational request system for efficient community engagement.
Ukrainian Presence in Illinois
Population Concentration
Illinois has one of the largest Ukrainian populations in the U.S., with tens of thousands of Ukrainians concentrated in the northwest suburbs of Chicago, including Buffalo Grove, Wheeling, Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, and Palatine.
Economic Integration
Many Ukrainian immigrants quickly integrate into the economy, purchasing homes, launching businesses, and creating jobs that contribute significantly to local communities and the state economy.
Recent Immigration
Post-2022, thousands of highly skilled Ukrainian refugees have settled in Illinois, bringing valuable engineering, IT, medical, and business expertise that enhances the state's professional landscape.
Economic Contribution
Business Leadership
Ukrainians are business leaders—many open enterprises that boost local economies through taxation and job creation, establishing a strong entrepreneurial presence in Illinois.
Cultural Initiatives
Ukrainian cultural and educational initiatives draw investment, tourism, and international collaborations, enriching the cultural landscape of Illinois and creating economic opportunities.
Community Impact
Community centers contribute to local economic development by offering event spaces, recreational activities, and cultural exchanges that benefit both Ukrainian and broader communities.
Key Challenges
1
Integration Barriers
Difficulty connecting generations
2
Venue Limitations
Lack of spaces for events
3
Outdated Infrastructure
Existing facilities inadequate
The Ukrainian community faces significant challenges in establishing a modern presence in Illinois. Existing Ukrainian institutions are outdated or lack accessibility for the growing population. There's a persistent difficulty in securing venues for community events, cultural initiatives, and educational programs.
Most critically, we observe an absence of an integrated cultural, economic, and residential hub for Ukrainian Americans that could serve as a focal point for community development and intergenerational connection.
Short-Term Solution
Identify Existing Space
Work with state and local governments to locate an available space in an existing public building in the northwest suburbs that could serve as our pilot location.
Secure Grant Funding
Getting state/city grants to support the initial establishment and operation of a small community center that demonstrates our concept and impact.
Launch Pilot Programs
Implement initial community services, cultural activities, and support programs to showcase the potential of a fully-realized Ukrainian Community Center.
Long-Term Vision: Ukrainian Community Plaza
Innovative Residential Units
Multi-unit residential complex with integrated coworking spaces and retail establishments, creating a live-work-play environment for Ukrainian Americans and the broader community.
Cultural Center
A separate cultural center featuring a concert hall, classrooms for music, dance, and educational programs that preserve Ukrainian heritage while embracing innovation.
Community Amenities
Walk-access church, recreational areas, playgrounds, and sports facilities that create a comprehensive community environment supporting physical, spiritual, and social wellbeing.
Economic Benefits of the Community Plaza
The proposed Ukrainian Community Plaza would generate significant economic benefits for the hosting city and surrounding areas. Job creation opportunities would span construction, retail, cultural programming, and administration. Direct economic benefits would include increased property values, tax revenue, and business activity.
Additionally, the center would attract visitors for cultural events and programs, boosting local tourism and hospitality industries while raising the profile of the host community.
Request for State Support
1
Space Allocation
We respectfully request guidance on identifying city/state grant opportunities for securing a community space in existing public buildings to launch our pilot program and demonstrate impact.
2
Land Development
For our long-term vision, we seek information on potential land allocations that could support a comprehensive Ukrainian Community Plaza development in the northwest suburbs.
3
Partnership Opportunities
We wish to explore opportunities for partnership with the State of Illinois to advance Ukrainian cultural, social, and economic integration through collaborative programs and initiatives.

Our implementation strategy begins with a pilot program in a smaller state/city granted space, allowing us to demonstrate the effectiveness and impact of our community initiatives. As we document success and build partnerships, we'll work toward the larger vision of a Ukrainian Community Plaza.
This phased approach ensures responsible growth while maximizing community benefit at each stage of development.
Historical Contribution of Ukrainians
Over 100 years of Ukrainian immigration have shaped Illinois and the broader U.S., contributing to industrial growth, education, and cultural enrichment. Post-WWII, Ukrainian immigrants were instrumental in building churches, schools, and business hubs, fostering strong communities throughout the state.
The most recent wave of Ukrainian refugees (post-2022) brings unmatched technological expertise and global business acumen, offering an unprecedented opportunity for Illinois to integrate highly skilled professionals into the workforce.
